the ranch’s vineyard

Rolling Vines Ranch & Vineyard consists of four small vineyard blocks located in beautiful Santa Ynez, California. The own-rooted vineyard is within the Los Olivos District AVA, a broad alluvial terrace between the Purisima Hills above Solvang and the western flank of Happy Canyon. The ranch’s terrain slopes ever so gently, with a moderate climate marked by warm days with occasional morning fog and crisp night air.

The story of Rolling Vines begins with the vines themselves: ungrafted and planted in 2018 with respect to the natural contours of the Santa Ynez Valley terrain located within Santa Barbara County. The small vineyard's gentle incline ensures that each individual vine benefits from the optimum exposure to the radiant California sun, while the cool breath of the Pacific brings with it morning mists that grace the vines with dew. As dusk falls, the clear night skies and crisp air descend, nurturing the grapes with a balanced coolness after the warmth of the day.
Our wine label, with an artist’s interpretation of our crisscrossing counoise vine posts, opens a visual passage to the region’s Figueroa Mountains, radiant in daylight and cloaked in a mosaic of shadows at dusk. Amidst this serene backdrop, our vineyard lies bathed in the shimmer of stars and the moon, encircled by the serenity of mature olive and pepper trees.

the grapes

The ranch’s one block of Syrah was planted with cuttings from Spear Vineyard.
The ranch’s two blocks of Grenache Alban is from Spear Vineyard located in the Sta. Rita Hills AVA and Vie Caprice Vineyard, a vineyard located several hundred feet down a shared private road.
The ranch’s one block of counoise was planted with cuttings from Tablas Creek using the echalas training method. The budwood was originally sourced from Château de Beaucastel in 1990.

the first harvest

The Rolling Vines Ranch & Vineyard, a small private ranch in Santa Ynez, was established in 2016. Two years later, the vineyard’s three varietals were planted: Grenache, Syrah, and Counoise. The ranch celebrated its first harvest in 2020. Over a year later, the estate’s first rosé was produced and bottled.

the viticulturist & winemaker

Erik and his team established our boutique vineyard from the ground up. He brings years of international vineyard experience together with a unique expertise in winemaking to develop exceptional wines. Mallea Wines, a collaboration with Justin Willet of Tyler Wines, produces Rhône-variety wines from vineyards in Santa Barbara County.

Prior to creating our vineyard and launching his successful wine label, Erik worked for producers in Oregon, New Zealand, and California's Central Valley before coming to Santa Barbara County.
